FAQ’s:
Q. Does my child need to bring a Life Jacket?
A. No, however, Life Jackets are STRONGLY recommended. About 80-90% of all participants will be wearing a life jacket.
Q. Where does the swim take place?
A. At the pond at River Rock Estates, (3800 West 3800 South Rexburg, ID). Feel free to go out and take a look. FYI…This is a private pond. Swimming will only be allowed Friday evening and the day of the race.
Q. Can you describe how the swim portion works?
A. We have swim lanes that go across the pond so kids swim straight. Swimming in open water is definitely different from in a pool and this helps get the pool feel for the kids. We send everyone in waves. Within each age group we send the kids across the water in groups of 10. We have about 12-14 lifeguards in the water swimming alongside the kids. We have a set of eyes dedicated to each participant the entire way across. We do have kids who get nervous and freak out a little once they get in the water, but our volunteers are quick to help hold them up and help them across. While we don’t require life jackets, in the 5-6 year old group I think there was only 1 or 2 kids that did it without a life jacket, but they had already been through a number of swim courses. We recommend they wear life jackets. most kids in all age groups wear them. We also have a drift boat and a few kayaks out in the water as well.
Q. How will the Transition Areas work?
A. There will be one transition area. When kids leave the water, they’ll make their way to the transition area and get on their bikes. Once completed with the bike portion of the event, they’ll bring the bike back to the same transition area where they’ll start the run.
Q. What if my child needs help in the transition area?
A. We will allow 1 parent/guardian to accompany the participant in the transition area if needed. There are a lot of kids coming through this area and it can get very congested, so we ask that spectators stay clear of this area so that the participants can easily move in and out of the transition.
Q. is there a closed off place to change out of a swimsuit?
A. No, the only area to change is in the transition area. Boys usually throw on a shirt and just bike and run in their swim trunks. Girls usually throw on a shirt and shorts over their swimsuit.
Q. Are bike helmets required?
A. Yes, Helmets are required. If you don’t have a helmet, we cannot let you participate.
Q. Are kids going to bike on the roads?
A. Yes, but this is a closed off subdivision, so there will be no traffic on the course.
Q. How is the course marked for the different age groups?
A. Each age group will be assigned a color. Depending on the age group they’ll get a red, green, or blue wrist band. This let’s our volunteers out on the course know which age group the kids are in and how to best help direct them on the course.
Q. Will there be volunteers out on the course?
A. Yes, There will be volunteers throughout the bike and run course. The course will be marked, but the volunteers are out there to ensure all the kids make the right turns, etc.
Q. My child has never done anything like this before and they are nervous. Do you have any advice for them?
A. For most kids the water portion is the most frightening up front. Once they’re in the water and moving the nerves go away and the kids have fun. We’ve seen a number of kids sign up with their brothers & sisters, or get a friend to sign up with them and they do the event together. A lot of times that can help calm the nerves for a first time participant.
Q. Do you time the event?
A. The Elite race that starts at 8am is timed. The other age groups 5-7, 8-9, 10-12 yr. old groups that start at 10am are not timed.
Q. Do kids get a prize for completing the event?
A. Yes, All participants will receive a finishers medal
Q. Will there be extra shirts for sale the day of the event?
A. Yes, but we will have a very limited quantity available on a first come first serve basis. Registration must be completed by Sunday, July 29th to guarantee a race shirt.
Q. When can I come pickup my race bag?
A. Packet pickup will be held the night before the event at River Rock Estates from 6-8pm.
Q. When is the last chance to register?
A. The last chance to register will be the night before the event on August 10th between 6-8pm. We will not allow any day of race registrations.
Q. What if I’m coming from out of town and can’t make it the night before to pick up the packet?
A. We will have a small table the morning of the event where you can sign in and pick up your packet. Please plan on coming a little earlier to ensure enough time to get ready.
Q. It says the start time is 10 am, but because you’re doing waves, is there a way to know the actual start time for each age group?
A. No, We have approximate times, but these are subject to change. The MC will announce over the loud speaker when each age group should head over to the area for their start. We’ll try and give a 10 – 15 minute warning to each age group so they can make their way to the start of the swim.
